Telephone

My name is Robert. I’m 12 years old, and my teachers say I’m a bit over descriptive. Bullies don’t understand a word of my journals. My dad and mom think my writings are brilliant. I live in a penthouse, and my bathroom is bigger than most of my friends’ houses. All my friends love watching TV on my large screen. I envy their normal TVs. Like most other kids, I like to play Telephone. It’s a game where someone thinks of a word, and as quietly as possible whispers that word to the next person in line, but only once. The second person whispers it to the third person, who in turn whispers it to the fourth, ect, ect. At the end, you have a completely different phrase, which you say aloud to everyone. The first person then says the original words aloud, and you have lots of fun comparing the two words. My History teacher says that that’s how legends are made.

That made me wonder whether Mr. Henry and Doctor James were legends. Mr Henry won the little race we had at town, and then fainted. Doctor James ran up to him, and told everyone that he would take care of him. A day later, Mr Henry was all fixed up, and Doctor James was left scowling. At least, that’s what I saw. 4 Newspapers had all different and controversial news. All of my friends’ parents subscribe to different news stations, and we love comparing stories as much as we love comparing phrases from Telephone. The next few paragraphs are from all different newspaper articles.

    Race at Harper Town

    By Zachary Flinn

On August 5, 2020, our best racer Henry was shot in the crowd of people after winning the race. Doctor James dashed out to help him, and after a long day, Mr. Henry was fixed up. Doctor James was scowling in the air against the people who did this, and Mr Henry is searching for revenge.

Poor Doctor James Helps a Fainted Man.

    By Mary June

Yesterday, the winner of the race fainted far from any help. Timid Doctor James decided to help him, and after a quiet afternoons work, The winner of the race was all fixed up. Doctor James went inside, and wished that life could be much quieter around town.

Strong Henry Rescued by Brave Doctor James.

    By John Isaacs

Henry fainted at the end of his race, which onlookers describe as surprising, because Henry was a very strong man. Doctor James bravely saved Henry, and has been classified as a town hero.

Doctor James at His Usual Antics

    By Gilbert Gardow

Everyone knows that Henry fainted at the race. Everyone knows that Doctor James fixed him up. But why was he scowling? What doctor scowls at a successful recovery? Inside their hospital are brewing cauldrons of every sort, all waiting to be tested. I accuse Doctor James of evil methods against our beloved racer!

As you see, at least one fact in every story is changed. I had to find the truth, so I went to Doctor James’ clinic. There were no cauldrons brewing anywhere in sight. The Doctor came out of his room, and he looked very careful, yet brave. I asked him what had really happened. He said that at the race, when Mr. Henry fainted, he wanted to make sure it was nothing serious. He took him to his medical room, and found nothing serious. Henry took a day of rest, and went back home happy as ever. Doctor James told him he just needed to drink more water. He took Henry home, and while going into the office, he screamed in pain, because he had stubbed his toe against the wall.

I then went to Mr Henry to get his story. He said that at the end of the race, he felt very dehydrated, and he fainted. He didn’t want anyone to make a big fuss about him. He was happy when he came too, it was nothing much, and then got escorted by the doctor home. He had enjoyed the race, and was happy to be home.

I believe that there are so many newspapers because nobody likes a simple story. They create many articles, and then it’s up to us to choose our favorite brand. If you’re still not convinced, the next day’s headlines were as follows: Nice Kid Comforts Mr Henry – By Zachary Flinn, Small Boy Argues with a Fainted Racer – By Mary June, Strong Henry has a Fan – By John Isaacs, and finally, Nosy Kid Asks Henry Annoying Questions, by Gilbert Gardow. Even though adults say that video-games are a big waste of time, I believe that reading the news is the biggest waste of time. Don’t tell my dad I said this, He happens to be Zachary Flinn, the biggest news writer.
